about

This haunting song was written as part of the soundtrack to the BBC radio dramatisation of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" in the 1980s. Soon after, in 1992, the composer, Stephen Oliver, died, aged only 42.

I have known and loved his music for this production since I first heard it, and was reminded of it again earlier in 2022 whilst watching the recent Amazon series "The Rings of Power".

Having also known the composer's mother in the 1970s, and also since 2022 is the 30th anniversary of Stephen's death, I thought it would be a lovely tribute if I recorded a version of this short song with the rest of my family taking part.

So here it is! I do hope you enjoy it. It's free, but if you'd like to pay anything at all for it then all profits are going to the Stephen Oliver Trust (administered by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, and with the permission of the composer's family). You can find out more about the composer and the trust here: stephenoliverorg.wordpress.com

And a huge thank you to Phil Toms for transcribing this arrangement from the original soundtrack :-)

Steve Bingham - violin, bass electric violin
Brenda Stewart - viola

All recorded by Steve, and mixed and mastered by Steve & Christopher Bingham.

lyrics

Gil-Galad was an Elven king
Of him the harpers sadly sing
The last whose realm was fair and free
Between the mountains and the sea

His sword was long, his lance was keen
His shining helm afar was seen
And all the stars of heaven's field
Were mirrored in his silver shield

But long ago he rode away
And where he dwelleth none can say
For into darkness fell his star
In Mordor where the shadows are
